About Kadar…

Kadar R. Small is a Brooklyn-based photographer, director, and filmmaker whose work explores intimacy, relationships, and community within Black and Brown spaces.

Born in San Juan, Trinidad and Tobago, and raised in Queens, NY—later spending his high school years in Atlanta—Small developed a deep appreciation for people-watching and social justice. After earning a BA in Advertising, Marketing, and Communications from the Fashion Institute of Technology, he began contemplating how his photography could serve both his community and the broader society.

His work focuses on documenting the lived experiences of Black and Brown communities, as well as the LGBTQ+ community, with a particular emphasis on intimacy and connection. Small’s passion for portraiture began in his youth, capturing candid moments in nightlife settings where Black and Brown individuals laughed, danced, and found solace in safe spaces. His portfolio extends to intimate portraits of Black men, challenging prevailing stereotypes and reimagining how they are seen within urban environments.
